PNF is an advanced form of MET. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)

These techniques incorporate a variety of techniques to stretch muscles and connective fibres and also to assist in the breakdown of fibrous adhesions. They are assisted and active stretching techniques that use the athletes own efforts and movements (the muscles own energies) aided by the therapist.

The results include:

> improved flexibility and range of movement of a joint
> increased elasticity of a joint
> improved joint mobility.

Problems may arise due to muscle over use, poor conditioning, excessive use, also due to physical and mental stress, injury or illness.

> improves strength and muscle tone which may have resulted form imbalance or adaptation following injury or illness.
> improves posture
> Gait or walking style

Neuromuscular Techniques — NMT
Local tensions in an area may be as a result of a trauma where the body is trying to protect and contain the damage, or in areas that are habitually held in tension and shortened position.
Neuromuscular techniques are generally used within a treatment such as sports massage or connective tissue manipulation.

Neuromuscular techniques help:
> Break down fibre adhesions and fibrositic nodules in muscles
> Calms hypersensitive areas in taut bands of muscles, maybe trigger points.
> Improves movement and muscle strength, reduces pain and discomfort, allows the area to feel better.
